Stage 1 - Disability Ownership Model™
The rumination of grief and injustice is raw, taking most of your attention.
It hurts to have lost so much.
You are frustrated that your best practical thinking is not available.
If you are overwhelm and it's too much to think past now, don't blame yourself. This kind of derailment causes your brain is doing exactly what brains do when everything shifts at once: it's narrowing its focus to get you through the next few hours. That's not weakness. That's neuroscience.
Friend, you are not alone.
Your mind is not broken.
It might be in scarcity mode.
When the nervous system detects ongoing threat - physical, financial, relational, or existential - it narrows mental bandwidth deliberately. Planning, perspective, and long-term decision-making are deprioritized in favor of immediate survival. This is called cognitive load tunneling. It is not a malfunction or a failure.
The problem: finding your bearing back requires exactly the capacities that scarcity suppresses. That is the trap of Stage 1. And the only way out is not to try harder - it is to reduce the load enough that the planning brain can come back online.
When it comes to your immediate physical needs
Can I Offer Guidance?
Give your body, heart and mind a chance to move forward and soothe the overwhelm while getting your immediate needs met.
I have prepared a Stage 1 Starter Pack to help you deal with what is most urgent, without taxing you more.
It is offered as a video and a worksheet to suit your preference of visual or auditory support.
No heavy thinking required, it's all fill-in-the-blank.
I would describe Étienne’s coaching style as caring, structured, reassuring, and action-oriented. He knows how to create a safe space where I can freely express my questions, fears, and ambitions without feeling judged. His attentive listening, precise restatements, and insightful questions have allowed me to step back and better organize my thoughts. Among his key strengths, I would highlight his ability to help me discover my own answers, to respect my pace, and to transform vague thoughts into a clearer, more realistic, and concrete vision.

What it looks like when Stage 1 starts to settle:
Imagine a Tuesday afternoon. For the first time in a while, you clearly know what today actually requires. It is written on a sticky note. It got done. Not because you covered everything perfectly, but enough to say, "I've got it covered." and it feels nice.
Your list and phone has names on it: People who are ready to help when you need it, and perhaps also a backup for Thursday.
You are on your way back to having a routine that will work for you, with more mental space to devote to what you choose to do with it.
What the Stage 1 Starter Pack takes you through
1
The Triage Worksheet
Not everything is a crisis - even when it feels that way. The Triage Worksheet maps six domains of immediate survival: body, housing, finances, relationships, medical care, and daily functioning. You mark what is holding and what is not. See what is unstable and what is. Prioritize without needing interpretation.
2
Map the Real Support in Your Life (The Support Inventory)
Find out who is actually available right now, for what specific thing, on what day. If contacting people feels daunting, use the simple cut & paste scripts provided. The Support Inventory structures this so you can make real, precise asks instead of general calls for help that leave you wanting.
3
Find the Problem Categories
Many Stage 1 crises are not five separate problems. They are one root problem generating five symptoms. This helps you trace your stressors back to their source - because solving the root often stabilizes the branches on its own.

Need some extra live help?
Some people feel using the tools in this stage works best alongside a thinking partner who can help you triage in real time.
Some also want to explore questions arise in their heart with someone who's been there many times.
That is what I do at Stage 1. Not a five-year plan. Not a coaching package. One conversation to make sure you are starting from the right place - with the right things in the right order.
One session. No commitment to anything beyond that.
Does something feel off? Not sure this is your stage? You can navigate to a different stage.
